This summer camp offers students in Grades 4 – 6 the opportunity to be introduced to Latin, the language of the ancient Romans, through the adventures of a little Roman mouse named Mimimus as he explores the empire! Students will learn about Roman culture, mythology, clothing, food, and art as they learn introductory elements of the language. They will develop a basic Latin vocabulary, and learn how to read fun elementary Latin sentences and stories.
As the parent of all Romance languages, as well as 90% of English polysyllabic words, Latin provides a wonderful background which provides great advantages to students in studying French, other Romance languages, and English. By understanding the Roman alphabet and its sounds (the basis for our own), developing a Latin vocabulary (where one Latin word yields numerous English and French derivatives), as well as learning essential grammatical concepts, students find their language skills advancing as an organic part of the activities. Students learn these concepts through storytelling, reading Latin stories and myths, creating ancient artworks, and cooking Roman foods.
★ Looking for a full-day camp experience? Campers attending this half-day camp can also attend this week’s Discovery Camp “Spring into Summer! Gymnastics and Trampoline Camp” daily from noon to 4:30 p.m. for an additional $90.
