For students entering Grades 5 – 8 in September 2017
Instructor: Chandra Wiegand
Would you like to be as fast as a calculator? Do you dream of improving your marks in mathematics class? Taught by Chandra Wiegand, a highly experienced and talented Elmwood math instructor, this two-week workshop is for students who wish to sharpen their knowledge of the single-digit multiplication pairs and their counterparts for division. Fluency in computation and knowledge of math facts are expectations laid out by the Ontario Curriculum. Automaticity of basic number combinations is essential for being able to quickly and accurately solve calculations. In this exciting and intensive camp, lessons and activities are designed around current brain research theories and best practices in the teaching of mathematics. Students will spend each morning improving their skills with number sense and examining strategies to master the basic facts involved with the two operations. Through lessons, activities and games, students will have the opportunity to overlearn fact families and work to increase their computational fluency. By building a solid foundation, students will gain confidence in their mathematical ability and will start the school year with their best foot forward.
*This is a two-week workshop – to derive maximum benefit, students are asked to complete both weeks
★ Looking for a full-day camp experience? Campers attending this half-day camp can also attend this week’s Discovery Camp “Art-a-palooza!” daily from noon to 4:30 p.m. for an additional $110.
