Why choose Elmwood Discovery Camps for Girls? Come see what everyone is talking about!

Open to all girls from the greater community and those already attending the school, our recreational day camps have just the right mix of creative exploration, active learning and play for girls in grades K – 6. Our campers experience new challenges, develop lasting friendships and enjoy an exhilarating range of hands-on activities within Elmwood School’s safe and caring environment.

Fun in the Kitchen!

New for 2017!

The multipurpose room, as well as the classrooms, will be air conditioned, so all our campers will be comfortable. In addition this year, Elmwood’s Early Childhood Educator will be working alongside our Kinder Counselor with our youngest campers

Learn New Skills and Try New Things

Each week has an exciting new theme for campers to enjoy. Elmwood Discovery Camps create a caring and positive environment for girls to learn through exploration and play. They are provided with appropriate instruction and equipment to enable them to develop their athletic, creative, artistic and social skills. Whether they are trying a new food, making a new friend or experimenting with a new material, our campers are sure to acquire wonderful new skills and experiences!

Stay Active

Campers spend much of the day outside in Elmwood’s beautiful, green campus, moving, running, jumping and playing. Each day is full of action and new discoveries, providing a wonderful opportunity to keep physically active. They are also able to rediscover their creative side away from television, Facebook and other isolating technologies.

Experienced, highly trained counselors

Our camp counselors are experienced and highly trained. They are generally qualified teachers, and they value each child as a unique individual. Our staff-student ratio is very low, and each age group benefits from interaction with additional volunteers from Elmwood’s high school.

Self Esteem and Independence

During camp, the girls have the opportunity to make decisions without their parents or usual friends around them. They participate in activities that enable them to succeed and accomplish something new each day. Guided by our experienced counselors, campers develop resilience, becoming more confident about themselves and their world.

New Friendships

Elmwood Discovery Camps welcome girls from all over Ottawa. Whether they are ‘old girls’ of the school, starting at Elmwood the following year, or at another school, every girl will quickly find herself relaxing and making friends. Thanks to the support of the counselors and their careful planning, all girls feel included and welcomed.

A typical week

Each week there is a unique theme with new knowledge and skills to acquire, and an exciting off-site excursion or special guest visit. Our campers can enjoy workshops with a nationally known magician, build and launch a rocket, attend a workshop at the national Gallery and learn how to use DNA to solve a crime.

Every camp ends with Friday Fun Day – an exhibition or show for the girls to display what they have accomplished throughout the week. For example, at the end of our Circus Camp, the girls will perform their skills for you in Elmwood’s historic auditorium.

Sign In and Sign Out

You are asked to sign your child in and out each day. This allows us to track your child’s attendance and for security reasons to make sure that we know who has picked them up at the end of the day.

Late Pick Up

We understand that parents and caregivers are occasionally unavoidably delayed. However, we ask that you make every effort to collect your daughter on time. A late fee of $20 will automatically be charged for late pick up.

Nut Awareness

Elmwood School is a nut free environment. We do not provide any foods that contain nuts and nut products and we ask that families refrain from sending foods with nut products to camp.

Staff training regarding life-threatening allergies ensures a proactive approach to food safety. Our staff are CPR and First Aid trained so that they will respond appropriately should there be an anaphylactic reaction.

Lost and Found

Two important things to note regarding children’s belongings – first, more are lost than found, and second, if it can get lost, it will! At least twice a week, please take a look in the Lost and Found tub so see if you spot something that you were not aware was missing. Also, to make the process easier, please label your child’s belongings clearly.

Despite our best efforts to return lost articles to their owners during the summer, there are always, inevitably, several bags of Lost and Found at the end of the season. It continues to be our policy to make every attempt to return any labelled clothing at the end of the summer. You will be contacted by email if we have found something belonging to you and it will be kept in the Junior School Office for collection.

After September 5, all unclaimed lost and found items will be donated to a local charity.
